The Race Is Over

6th May 2008

Will someone please tell Senator Clinton? The race is run, you did well but it is time that we all move towards winning the Whitehouse in November. It over. Its done.

[Update]: Pete points out in the comments that we can tell her until we are blue in the face and she isn’t going to listen. At Rebels Are We!, Colby points out that the superdelegates are the only ones who can really send the message. Demonstrate some leadership and pick a side.

Can I tell her? Please! That would be so much fun…

I’ve had this irresistible urge to laugh since last night. Some might assume that it’s because I despised Clinton and relish her defeat, but it isn’t. I’m just so relieved that this is finally drawing to a close. Ya know, there’s this McCain fella out there that we should be hammering. Let’s do that, instead of picking on our friends.

Sorry, guys, I don’t think Hillary is hearing you. I saw her when she was in Missoula and signed some list. Since then, I get about five emails a day from her campaign. Here’s the latest, from this morning’s crop:

“Dear Peter,

Today, in every way that I know how, I am expressing my personal determination to keep forging forward in this campaign …”

Colby? I thought you were going to tell her!

Yes, I heard Terry McAuliffe on the news this morning claiming that there was no way this race was over. When asked what possible way he saw the campaign could continue, there was no coherent answer. He equated her leaving the race to quiting the world series in the seventh game. Someone should have reminded him that to have gotten to the seventh game you would have to win at least half the previous contests.

No. I fear that she will continue on her scorched earth campaign. I also saw today where George McGovern switched his endorsement from Hillary to Obama because she had no chance at winning. I have a great deal of respect for Senator McGovern, especially on this topic. He knows all about having no chance at winning.

He also knows all about getting smeared by his Democrat compatriots before, during and after the nominating process. The general campaign that was killed by a thousand whispers and back biters.

I think the operative word here is “today.” Tomorrow will bring a new reality…

This might be giving too much credit, but I would venture a guess that she wants to pull in some funds to pay down the debts with a few more fund raisers. It seems that she might be poised to loan herself more money, so who knows.

I think the scary part of being in debt for her is the 10 million she owes Mark Penn & Co. How would you like that hanging over your head?

The next reporting day should show some interesting things.

Well, money or no, there are some things that just can not be explained away or ignored:

In Indiana exit polls, a full quarter of Clinton’s own supporters said that they did not think she was honest.
[snip]
Perhaps the most disturbing indicator for Clinton was the fact that 15% of those who voted for her on Tuesday said they would not back her in November (7% of Obama voters said they would not support him in the general election).

How woudl it look if Hillary withdrew, and then won primaries in Kentucky and Oregon and Montana and South Dakota? It would make Obama look very bad. Best she stays in it until primaries are over.

It happened to Clinton in Connecticut after Tsongas dropped out. Don’t think it would be that big of a deal.

I’m begining to wonder if she says she’s staying in order to get bought out. From the Huffpo.

“One of the most inviting is the near certainty that the Obama campaign would agree to pay back the $11.4 million she has loaned her own bid, along with an estimated $10 million to $15 million in unpaid campaign expenses.”

If she can’t get power, at least she can have money.

Swede, it is getting a little creepy that you are making sense on these things. I had not thought of this, but then again who’lda thunk of you as a Huffpo reader.

Somehow, if I was Obama, it would really gravel me to have to pay off Clinton’s debt to Mark Penn & Co., when I know the money was spent to smear me.

And it would piss me off even more if I thought that Clinton was running up her debt loaning her campaign money, knowing that I was eventually going to have to pick up the bill for her deficit spending.

Running a campaign in debt does not make Clinton look very presidential or electable.

So what are the people going to say when it is an Obama & Clinton ticket? :-) OK that is a stretch but it is time for her to throw in the towel. Nice campaign, lots of people out to vote, but like many of you have said it is time to circle the wagons as they have a job to do in November!

“So what are the people going to say when it is an Obama & Clinton ticket?”

It ain’t gonna happen.

If you look at demographics to balance out the Obama ticket, of course, you’d look at Clinton’s paste-on, faux-populist reemergence as her raison d’etre for staying in the race. She stepped into John Edwards’ shoes–it took her a while to figure out that was the only way to stay in the race–as the change message had been appropriated successfully by Obama.

So Obama needs to go shopping for a solid populist that can smooth over his rust belt problems (and maybe teach him a thing or two about “low-level signals” when out glad-handing). There’s a lot of good people in that mold, from Evan Bayh, to Ed Rendell & Bob Casey, John Edwards, Claire McCaskill, and on and on. Best not to pull good people out of the Senate, so that winnows the list. Bill Richardson brings lots of plusses.

Obama doesn’t need to keep the drama queen and her sidekick hubby on the campaign trail with him. All of Clinton’s baggage that the Republican’s are drooling over unleashing on her would just accrue to Obama. If Clinton lambasted Obama for the company he kept (Rezko, Wright, ayers), such would the Republicans lambast Hillary for the company she keeps (Bill). I’m sure the Obama campaign is acutely aware of the liability that putting Clinton on the ticket brings.

The first thing i would say is: “Senator Obama, get a food taster, pronto”!

Like JC said, Obama/Clinton is just not gonna happen.

Hillary is acting positively deranged in her frantic attempt to get herself installed in the Oval Office. Now, she’s overtly playing the race card & sounding like a Mississippi pol, not a NY Senator/Dem candidate. Fie on her! She needs to just go away & let us prepare for the GE.

I do feel sorry for her hardcore supporters, and as a woman I can sympathise with many of my sisters’ desires to put a female in the WH. But, would we vote for Ann Coulter for the job, because she had the right chromosomes? Of course not.

Yes, it’s hard to see your candidate lose, but we’ve all been through that. You know what? I’ve had to suck it up & move on & work to get out the vote for my second choice more times than I can remember. Her followers need to mourn, then get on board to defeat the RW agenda, and get a Democrat in the WH.

(Sorry if I sound harsh, but HRCs gotten on my last nerve.)

Gosh Swede, what do you want me to say? Do we really want to jump on misstatements all the time? I can do that. Remember when McCain was SOOOOOOO old that he could not remember the difference between Iranian trained extremists and and Al Queda? Hahaha! Joe Lieberman had to whisper it in his ear! Oh man, that was awesome!

The difference here? Obama misspoke once, McCain did it about 10 times because he really couldn’t remember the difference.

Im sorry Shane, my gloating was over the top. To make it up I’ll throw this one from inside the “bunker” of the Hillary campaign HQ’s. Some written words NSFW, enjoy.
