Give me a break Hillary

25th March 2008

Others (as usual) have already picked this up, and I am sure it is old news to anyone who has cable; but for those of us who live in the dark ages, sans cellphone laptop or cable, I thought it was important to point out.

On March 17, 2008, Hillary spoke at George Washington University, and here is part of what she said:

“I certainly do remember that trip to Bosnia, and as Togo said, there was a saying around the White House that if a place was too small, too poor, or too dangerous, the president couldn’t go, so send the First Lady. That’s where we went. I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base.”

You can see it at CNN.com, which shows her entrance from exiting the airplane on, but I can’t figure out how to embed it, so follow this link, if you want to see it. [ When trying to fix this post, I found another great video]  She goes on to say:

“The mistakes in Iraq are not the responsibility of our men and women in uniform but of their Commander-in-Chief. From the decision to rush to war without allowing the weapons inspectors to finish their work or waiting for diplomacy to run its course.”

I am pretty sure that Hillary was one of the elected representatives of the people who voted not to wait for the weapons inspectors or diplomacy, which frankly, in my opinion, makes her responsible, in part, for authorizing the “the decision to the rush to war”. I do however, agree with her that this is not the responsibility of our men and women in uniform.

Still further :

“Senator Obama has said often that words matter. I strongly agree. But giving speeches alone won’t end the war and making campaign promises you might not keep certainly won’t end it. In the end the true test is not the speeches a president delivers, it’s whether the president delivers on the speeches.”

Yes, words do matter, especially when we have just been through 8 years of a President manipulating and out-right lying to the American people. Not to mention that the guy in the position before the present one lied to the American people as well. Wouldn’t you think that someone on the campaign should have fact checked her sniper fire story? And shouldn’t Hillary have had the presence of mind to differentiate between sniper fire and being read a poem, while arriving with her daughter, Sheryl Crow and Sinbad in tow? This story hasn’t appeared in her speeches once, but several times.

While the adrenaline of a situation can alter your perception; I can tell the difference between walking through a sketchy neighborhood, and being on my guard vs. having one gun at the back of my head and one under my chin and being told to hand over my wallet and belongings. And I certainly expect the next President of the US to be able to.

More here, here and here.

Will They Listen Now?

14th January 2008

To all the naysayers who complained that only liberal pussys and retired generals were demanding that Gitmo be closed:  the Chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff (read: the head of the military other than Bush) is requesting the same thing:

The chief of the U.S. military said Sunday he favors closing the prison here as soon as possible because he believes negative publicity worldwide about treatment of terrorist suspects has been “pretty damaging” to the image of the United States.

“I’d like to see it shut down,” Adm. Mike Mullen said in an interview with three reporters who toured the detention center with him on his first visit since becoming chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff last October.

Negative publicity, international reputation, treatment of terrorists?  These are the same things that Liberals have been saying about Gitmo for years now.  I wonder if now, that a reputable military man is saying the same things, if we will see any change of tune from our friends on the right?

Krauss Makes A Stand

27th December 2007

The big story in the Chronicle today is Bozeman Mayor Jeff Krauss’s refusal to sign the recently passed Iraq anti-war resolution.

Krauss said he opposed the resolution for two reasons: he considered it inappropriate for the city to be discussing a federal issue; and U.S. troops’ perseverance in Iraq is saving lives.

I have written before about Krauss’s first point; whether or not local governments should be involved in federal issues. My finding then, which I still agree with, is that local governments are taking up this (and other) mantles in the absence of any kind of actual inspirational leader in our federal government executive. This is what I had to say at that time (about Kyoto):

I am constantly reminded, and impressed, by localized government entities that speak/act on issues of national (or in this case, international) importance. The number of city and county governments that have officially spoken up in support of the Kyoto Protocol is a fine example of this kind of local action, and this new agreement is an assertive extension of that kind of movement. This five-state venture is the most recent development in a series of pacts that these states have been working on for a while now.

When there is no real leadership; when nothing is getting done, more localized leadership has stepped up to fill in the void on issues like global warming, Iraq, and gun control.

Of course, we can (and we often do) argue about Krauss’s second point; that our presence in Iraq is worth the price(s) we are paying. If Krauss really thinks that a city government has no place in federal issues, then how does a Mayor have authority to speak to the effectiveness of U.S. troops in Iraq? It is a bit of a catch 22, but in the end this resolution passed and will go on to President Bush, Montana’s congressmen, and the Bozeman-area state reps, with or without Krauss’s signature.

In the space normally reserved for the mayor’s signature on the official copy of the resolution, two of the three commissioners who voted in favor of the resolution will sign instead, said City Manager Chris Kukulski. That is the protocol spelled out in the city charter. In addition, the resolution will note that Krauss refused to sign.

Executioners in the Wings

1st December 2007

September 11, 1973 was a day of infamy, a day when the United States set aside all pretenses of love of democratic rule and unleashed a beast, Augusto Pinochet, on Chile. The elected president, Salvador Allende, apparently committed suicide as forces overran the country’s palace. The Supreme Court and legislature were disbanded, and fascism took hold. People were tortured and disappeared, and blood ran in the gutters even of Washington, DC, where Chilean diplomat Orlando Letelier was murdered by DINA, Chile’s secret police force. (George H.W. Bush, head of the CIA at that time, took no action.) The United States supported Pinochet throughout his bloody reign, and even now the specter of fascism hangs over the Chilean people like a guillotine - they dare not get out of line.

Venezuela has gotten out of line. The cauldron’s been bubbling for some years now - the U.S. tried once by bloody coup d’état in 2002 to overthrow the elected government of Hugo Chavez, but was thwarted by a popular counter-rebellion. In the mean time, Chavez has enacted massive reforms that deeply affect the Venezuelan oligarchy - that upper crust of wealth and privilege that the U.S. always supports.

Tomorrow, December 2, 2007, Venezuelans will vote on a significant overhaul of their constitution. The U.S. media, to the degree it has covered the matter at all, has chosen to focus on attempts to do away with term limits for Chavez, calling him a dictator. But the issues run much deeper - included in the referenda are agrarian reform (resettlement for landless peasants), social security for street sellers and domestic workers, reduction of the workweek to 36 hours, and free higher education for all citizens. The reforms go right to the heart of what has always been wrong in Latin America - extremes of wealth and poverty.

The U.S. (surprise!) has not been sitting silently by, nor has it been a democratic force. A memo exposed on November 26 from Michael Middleton Steere, a CIA agent operating undercover as a State Department official, to his boss, CIA director Michael Hayden, exposes a host of clandestine activities in Venezuela. Called “Operation Pincer”, the movement seeks to 1) undermine the referendum on Sunday by means of demonstrations and impediments at the polls, and 2) to discredit the vote as fraudulent once the reforms pass (passage is pretty much assured). The memo points to CIA success in mobilizing upper class university students to march against the election.

That’s typical fare - the CIA has always felt free to interfere in elections in other countries, though God forbid anyone should do the same here. James Petras, Professor Emeritus of Sociology and Latin America Studies at Binghamton University, New York, has written of other U.S. activities in Venezuela in an article entitled “CIA Destabilization Memo Surfaces“, over at Counterpunch. Most alarming is this:

The ultimate objective of ‘Operation Pincer’ is to seize a territorial or institutional base with the ‘massive support’ of the defeated electoral minority within three or four days (presumably after the elections though this is not clear. JP) backed by an uprising by oppositionist military officers principally in the National Guard.

Arms caches have been uncovered - a bloody coup is in the works, and it looks like it is set to start tomorrow.

…a military dictated outcome, would lead to a blood bath, such as we have not seen since the days of the Indonesian Generals’ Coup of 1966, which killed over a million workers and peasants or the Argentine Coup of 1976 in which over 30,000 Argentines were murdered by the US- backed Generals.

The United States masquerades as a democratic force in the world while, unbeknownst to its own citizens, its agents crawl around the back alleys of the world seeking to thwart democratic processes. When elections favor U.S. interests, as occasionally happens (Nicaragua in 1990, for example), the U.S. supports elections. But when they don’t (Nicaragua in 1984, for example), the U.S. either screams “Fraud! Fraud!” and demands a new count, imposes economic embargoes, works behind the scenes to overturn the results, or instigates violence (Nicaragua, 1985, for example).

Venezuela is an oil-rich country, and as such, cannot be allowed too much rope. Chavez has already taken her to places unimagined in Latin America in the 20th century. Furthermore, he has destabilized the rule of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, bankrolling democracy movements in other countries, such as Ecuador. He is clearly dangerous.

I have said on many occasions that Hugo Chavez is a “dead man walking”. The CIA memo has exposed his executioners. The violent coup is in the wings, and tomorrow may be the beginning.

Stay tuned. Venezuela is about to have its own 9/11/73.

A Rovian Rewrite

28th November 2007

Winston Smith! Man your station at the Ministry of Truth! The terrorists have sneaked propaganda into the history books claiming that it was President Bush who pushed for the war in 2002. We all know it was the ‘Democratic’ senate that pushed for the war! The truth has come down from brother Karl:

…the Bush Administration did not want Congress to vote on the Iraq War resolution in the fall of 2002, because they thought it should not be done within the context of an election. Rove, you see, did not think the war vote should be “political”.

Moreover, according to Rove, that “premature vote” led to many of the problems that cropped up in the Iraq War. Had Congress not pushed, he says, Bush could have spent more time assembling a coalition, and provided more time to the inspectors.

It is common knowledge that President Bush wanted to build a coalition and no politicize the war. We all know that he wanted to give the inspectors time to do their jobs but was pushed into war by the Democrat’ senate.

Winston. You missed one thing. This White house press release from September of 2002 titled “President Urges Congress to Pass Iraq Resolution Promptly“.

We realize there’s little time left in — before the Senate and the House goes home, but we’re optimistic a lot can get done before now and then. Congress must act now to pass a resolution which will hold Saddam Hussein to account for a decade of defiance.

Fix that, and also, change the math back to Karl’s math while you are at it.

George Bush Hates America

14th November 2007

I am really tired of trying to be somewhat diplomatic on issues, which has been my want as of late. Today’s veto of the health and education spending bill just before he was handed another $471-billion in supplemental spending for the pentagon shows that the man doesn’t give a damn about anything but his war.

I’ll put it to you this way: it is estimated 18,000 American’s die each year from a lack of health care. This is real stuff. The statistical chance of getting killed by a terrorist in this country is next to null. About 3000 in the last 10 years? 180,000 have died in that same time span from a lack of health care. how many people have died in America from an Iraqi terrorist in the last 10 years? Zero. What the hell is going on here that we have a president that cares more about a non-threat than a real threat?

I urge Democrat’s to stand behind this:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Tuesday that Democrats won’t approve more money for the Iraq war this year unless President Bush agrees to begin bringing troops home.
-
By the end of the week, the House and Senate planned to vote on a $50 billion measure for operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The bill would require Bush to initiate troop withdrawals immediately with the goal of ending combat by December 2008.
-
If Bush vetoes the bill, “then the president won’t get his $50 billion,” Reid, D-Nev., told reporters at a Capitol Hill news conference.
-
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., made a similar statement last week in a closed-door caucus meeting.

Email Jon Tester and Max Baucus on this. Remind them exactly what America’s priorities ought to be. I was going say to contact Denny Rehberg on this, but then I remembered that he drank the kool-aid right down and is a lockstep supporter of George Bush’s war over education and healthcare. Have a look at Bill Kennedy instead.

Iraq War the Big Loser in Montana

7th November 2007

Seems like the Iraq War was the big loser in Montana.

Both Helena’s and Missoula’s anti-Iraq war referendums won decisively with majority numbers - Helena’s taking nearly 62% of support, and Missoula with almost 65%!

Reaffirming Helena’s anti-Iraq War referendum vote was the dismissal of the anti-anti Iraq War referendum - a call to give Bush a blank check, with no conditions, for funding of the Iraq war - by a slightly-less than the nearly 62% support the anti-Iraq war referendum received.

Only two cities, I know, but I’ll take the time to point out that both are over 60% threshold…..

7 U.S. forces were killed on Monday.

3857 U.S. forces have been killed in Iraq.

2007 has been the deadliest year.

853 U.S. forces have died this year.

118 U.S. forces have been killed since September 1st.

The worse previous year was 2004, with 849 U. S. forces killed.

24 Sons of Montana have died.

How many more?

Email Rep. Dennis Rehberg and tell him “Not One More!”

Email Sen. Max Baucus and tell him “Not One More!”

Email Sen. Jon Tester and tell him “Not One More!”

Support our U.S. forces by bringing them home.

And we have two months to go.

Out, Damned Spot!

2nd November 2007

I just love the type of evidence I’m about to cite here because it hits us right where we live - right square in our giant blind spot. How can we talk about what we are not allowed to see? There have been studies done before in 2004 and 2006, by Johns Hopkins and published in Lancet, that spoke of massive civilian casualties in Iraq - as many as 655,000 in October of 2006 (excluding Fallujah). Polls such as this create cognitive dissonance - while Americans see some violence in Iraq, and hear of bombings that kill 29 people, 70 people, etc., 655,000 is way out of line. Can’t be.

Denial ensues, followed by vilification. The Hopkins studies are pooh-poohed, its authors castigated. And it’s really interesting - even though all right-thinking people just know that Hopkins is wrong, nobody wants to do any more study. The Pentagon, the richest organization on the face of the earth, has massive resources at its disposal and some of the smartest people on the planet, but they will not look into the matter. Their official position: “We can’t count. Too busy.”

Anyway, I cite now Opinion Business Research, a British outfit that does polling. They did a poll in August of this year of 1,499 Iraqis aged 18 and older, and asked the following question:

How many members of your household, if any, have died as a result of the conflict in Iraq since 2003 (ie as a result of violence rather than a natural death such as old age)? Please note that I mean those who were actually living under your roof.

They got the following results:

None 78%
One 16%
Two 5%
Three 1%
Four or more 0.002%

Extrapolating on 4,050,597 households in a nation of 27.5 million, they conclude that there have been 1,220,580 violent deaths since the invasion in 2003, and calculating the effect on the edges of the margin of error, a minimum of 733,158 to a maximum of 1,446,063. That’s about one in every 22 Iraqis now dead. Add to that an estimated two million refugees, and I’d say we’ve done quite a number on that country.

We can quit any time now. The World Trade Center is officially avenged.

Of course, the poll is wrong, the people who did it are terrorist-sympathizers, and anyway, we don’t really want to study this matter any further.

Out, damned spot!

Poll and supporting data can be accessed here.

Counting commas…

24th October 2007

Counting commas…

I can’t even count the commas and zeros the government is talking about to fund the war in Iraq. The current physical year, August, September and October is some 196 Billion dollars and the President now wants an additional 46 Billion dollars as emergency funding to support the war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Of course this would have to by-pass the normal funding channels, which I highly doubt the Democrats (and many Republicans) will support that “open” checkbook. Also, please keep in mind the National debt – How many Trillion dollars?

The bottom line is too many commas and too many zeros for any average person to count or understand the enormity of $$$ being spent to fight what? Our freedom? It surely isn’t yours or mine.

The question to any of the hopeful candidates running for President would be – When and how would you stop all of this bloodletting?

Keep in mind that with this much money we could be solving a lot of families without insurance to insure their kids. With this much money we could have the resources needed to fight the raging fires throughout the United States. We could use this money to rebuild the New Orleans area from the throngs of Katrina. Need one go on?

The time is NOW my friends. We cannot let this to continue with no end in sight. We must take care of number one (us) before we can even begin to think about number 2, 3, 4.

We Got Our Lapdog For The Next War

2nd October 2007

It is a sickness, really it is. As it has become more and more clear why we invaded Iraq, Gordon Brown has reportedly signed on to the Bush administrations plans to bomb Iran (Isn’t there a song about that? John?):

A plan by the Bush administration to launch surgical strikes on Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps has won the support of Gordon Brown, according to a US report, although a presidential “execute order” required for such an operation has yet to be issued.

The report in The New Yorker magazine by the journalist Seymour Hersh states that the White House has concluded that many of its problems in Iraq are the responsibility of Tehran. But rather than conduct an unpopular all-out assault on Iran’s nuclear facilities, the US is planning limited air strikes, arguing that they are needed to defend soldiers in Iraq.

So, this war sucks. Let’s start a new one. England! Snap to. Peh. A pox on their house.

And this works how?

27th September 2007

WASHINGTON, DC—Almost a year after the cessation of major combat and a month after the nation’s first free democratic elections, President Bush unveiled the coalition forces’ strategy for exiting Iraq.

Enlarge Image BushBush announces the pullout of Iraq through Iran.

“I’m pleased to announce that the Department of Defense and I have formulated a plan for a speedy withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq,” Bush announced Monday morning. “We’ll just go through Iran.”

Bush said the U.S. Army, which deposed Iran’s longtime enemy Saddam Hussein, should be welcomed with open arms by the Islamic-fundamentalist state.

“And Iran’s so nearby,” Bush said. “It’s only a hop, skip, and a jump to the east.”

According to White House officials, coalition air units will leave forward air bases in Iraq and transport munitions to undisclosed locations in Iran. After 72 to 96 hours of aerial-bomb retreats, armored-cavalry units will retreat across the Zagros mountains in tanks, armored personnel carriers, and strike helicopters. The balance of the 120,000 troops will exit into the oil-rich borderlands around the Shatt-al-Arab region within 30 days.

Pentagon sources said U.S. Central Command has been formulating the exit plan under guidelines set by Bush.

“The fact is, we’ve accomplished our goals in Iraq,” said General George Casey, the commander of coalition forces in the Iraqi theater. “Now, it’s time to bring our men and women home—via Iran.”

Questions have been raised about the unprecedented size of the withdrawal budget.

“I’m asking Congress to approve a $187-billion budget to enable us to exit as smoothly as possible,” said Casey, whose budget request includes several hundred additional M1A1 Abrams battle tanks, 72 new C-130 cargo planes, and two brigades of artillery. “We’re concerned about the safety of our troops, so we need to have the capacity to deal with insurgent forces all the way from the Iraqi border through to Tehran.”

Senate Wastes Time With Useless Rhetoric

20th September 2007

Today, the upper house of our great legislative body wasted precious time passing a feel-good amendment when it should have working on more important issues.  The amendment read:

To express the sense of the Senate that General David II. Petraeus, Commanding General, Multi-National Force-Iraq, deserves the full support of the Senate and strongly condemn personal attacks on the honor and integrity of General Petraeus and all members of the United States Armed Forces.

Of course, this amendment was issued in response to recent Move On advertisements that have attacked General Petraeus.  It angers me that the Senate feels the need to wag their collective finger at Americans using their right to free speech and political expression.  Furthermore, this bill again contains the feel good support-the-troops overtone; once again suggesting the fallacy that opposing the war is opposing the troops.

It was the reference to the troops that won this amendment its overwhelming support, with a vote of 72-25.   Once again we see how hesitant our representatives are to call a spade a spade when allegations of being unpatriotic are floating about.  Both Tester and Baucus embarrassed our state by signing onto this ‘amendment’. The Senate has far more pressing business to take care of; they should spend their time solving the Iraq problem instead of censuring people who are just saying their peace.

Besides, if anyone deserves to be scolded for their behavior towards our military service people, there are far more appropriate targets.

Giuliani AWOL on Terrorism

18th September 2007

While the blog-o-sphere debates the justifiability of Move On’s General Betray-Us ad, what shouldn’t go unnoticed is the far more pertinent piece on Presidential contender Rudy Giuliani.  This ad is centered around Giuliani’s alleged absence from participation in the Iraq Study Group, which he was once a member of.  The ad’s script reads:

Rudy Giuliani has always been a big fan of George Bush’s war in Iraq. Yet when Giuliani had the chance to actually do something about the war, he went AWOL. After skipping important meetings of the Iraq Study Group, he quit. And gave speeches. For money. Republican voters should ask: “Giuliani: where were you when it counted?” “Rudy Giuliani. A betrayal of trust.”

For a man who has based his entire campaign around national security and terrorism, the contention that he consciously skipped, and then quit, meetings of this group could be quite damaging. The adage “actions speak louder than words” has never been more appropriate than here.
The New York Times took a look at the ad, and its assertions, in its Ad Watch.  Is this ad’s claims a fair representation of what happened? Here is a breakdown of their review of the ad, as well as my thoughts.

The facts asserted in the spot are correct, although it uses the term “AWOL” loosely.

Well, fact is more important anyhow.  I would think the reference to AWOL was mostly the invocation of a familiar term, especially with the military overtones it contains.  Appropriate, when considering the allegations involved.

Mr. Giuliani urged pre-emptive action in Iraq to remove Saddam Hussein. He was appointed to the Iraq Study Group but quit after two months.

You would think that ‘America’s mayor’ would be chomping at the bit to have a say at this level of involvement.  He has staked his political campaign on his super-personal level of involvement in the attacks of September 11th (and the experience it has given him), so participation in this group seems like a given.

He did not attend any of the meetings during his tenure in 2006, according to Newsday, and was given an ultimatum to show up or quit.  Explaining his absences, Mr. Giuliani cited “previous time commitments,” which Newsday said were lucrative speeches.

Here we see where Giuliani’s true motivations were; fund raising for his upcoming campaign was a higher priority than participating in a study tied directly to his city’s tragedy.  If he wanted to run for President, that was fine, but he shouldn’t be touting the level of involvement in national security and terrorist deterrence that he has been.

After the study group’s report was released in December, Mr. Giuliani said he had left because he was running for president and thought the group should be non-political.

So we see how Giuliani’s priorities really stack up; what was more important to him.

Ad Watch concludes that this is a potentially detrimental ad, and I have to agree.  Assuming that it gets enough exposure to spread itself (and people actually pay attention to its content, rather than discrediting fact due to its source), the implications set forth by this ad should give everyone, especially Republican voters, great pause.  I respect that fact that Conservatives want a nominee who will be tough on terror, and it is clear the Giuliani is not that candidate.

Bush’s Sleight of Hand

14th September 2007

Perhaps you watched Bush’s address to the American people last night; the speech obviously intended to ‘remind’ everyday Americans about the progress we are making there.  Progress such as this:

  • Today, most of Baghdad’s neighborhoods are being patrolled by Coalition and Iraqi forces who live among the people they protect. Many schools and markets are reopening. Citizens are coming forward with vital intelligence. Sectarian killings are down. And ordinary life is beginning to return.
  • Today, Baqubah is cleared. Diyala Province is the site of a growing popular uprising against the extremists. And some local tribes are working alongside Coalition and Iraqi forces to clear out the enemy and reclaim their communities.
  • Today, these groups [Shia extremists and Iranian-backed militants] are being broken up, and many of their leaders are being captured or killed.

Maybe some of that is true, I have never been one to doubt that we might affect some positive change in Iraq, I just question the cost (especially in human life) that we paying to do so and whether or not that is worth it.  Either way, it seems that our President was all to willing to tell Congress something he wasn’t willing to tell the electorate in general, today indicating to Congress that the progress in Iraq has not been so substantial:

The White House told Congress Friday that Iraqi leaders have gained little new ground toward meeting key military and political goals, a discouraging assessment a day after President Bush said that progress justifies a large continued U.S. military presence there.

The administration’s first required report on benchmarks, in July, showed the Iraqi government was making satisfactory progress toward meeting eight of 18 goals and unsatisfactory progress on eight others. Two others couldn’t be rated for performance.

The follow up report to Congress on Friday concluded that Iraqis have done enough to move only one benchmark — allowing former members of Saddam Hussein’s Baath Party to hold government positions — from the unsatisfactory to satisfactory column.

It isn’t as though a slew of new information was happened upon between last evening and this morning, so obviously a decision was made to leave this discouraging information out of last night’s speech.  Is there a justifiable reason for doing so?  I don’t think so; I think it is yet another in a long line of attempts to misinform the voting populace.

What do you think?
